Phuket’s Island Tourism Boom: One Million Chinese Visitors Expected After Songkran Festival
Phuket, a popular tourist destination, is set to welcome an additional one million Chinese tourists this year due to a targeted tourism campaign in three major Chinese cities. Mr. Anupab Vejwanichsanong, Vice President of the Phuket Administration Organization, announced today that this initiative is expected to bring a million more Chinese visitors to Phuket by the end of the year, boosting the local economy with an estimated 40 billion baht in Phuket’s tourism revenue.
Last year, Phuket received about 1.7 million Chinese visitors, a decrease from the pre-pandemic annual influx of 3.1 million tourists. To boost tourism, Phuket officials and tourism representatives met with Chinese travel agents in Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Chengdu from April 8-12.
The Phuket’s tourism Association is positive about restoring Chinese tourist numbers to pre-Covid levels by next year. Additionally, the recent visa-free travel agreement between Thailand and China, effective since March 1, has raised tourism expectations. Reports from five Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) offices in key Chinese cities indicate a significant increase in cross-border tourism by the end of 2024, aligning with positive projections from leading Chinese news agencies and online data sources.
